The samurai are universally recognized warriors. Tales of their heroics have fascinated people since the 12th century. Bushido (The Way of the Samurai) is the code of chivalry by which they lived, and encompasses not only mastery of the martial arts, but also the ideals of morality, bravery, compassion, respect, honor, glory, and loyalty. The sword was the soul of the samurai, and they lavished great attention on their weapons and armor, creating stunning works of lethal beauty.
This summer the Museum is hosting the renowned collection of samurai weapons and armor from the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture. Come join us as we explore the samurai warrior class who served Japan through periods of intense warfare, as well as periods of peace and cultural brilliance.
